The MTC

On July 8th Braden's journey as a missionary began.

He has been called to the Milan Italy mission. He was in the MTC for 6 weeks. I have a lot of catching up to do, so I will be short! This was a great day, really hard, but we got to spend a lot of time together before we dropped him off. I am so glad that he had so many of his good friends there at the same time. So for those of you who haven't gotten to read his first letter, here it is....

CIAO!! Hey guys so the first day at the mtc was super overwhelming I got my tag and then was off to class. My teachers are Fratello Kanutson and Sorella Rulsell they only speak italtian to me and that was super rough at first. My companions name is Josh Thompson hes from LA but he went to byu. I actually knew him before the mission. he came over to the apartment a few times before. he is super cool on me and him and another companionship went to school first. I kinda feel that we are a little more mature than the other missionaries that leave strait out of highschool. Also I saw sam on the first day and that made things so much easier like i needed that and I saw Cristina too and that made it easier also. im glad i have friends here from home so i can have a little taste of it.  IN my district so my class there is anziano simonsen from bountiful utah then there is anziano grover from mississippi hes a clown always forgeting everything and all kinda of stuff, and there is the sisters who are sorella siena abnd sorella conde the are super nice. everyone in my zone is going to rome only 6 of use are going to milano. but we all know that the milano is the better mission. there are some missionaries that just graduated and are older than me but i still feel a lot older than them The days here at the mtc are very long. we wake up at 6:30 and be at class by 7 and the whole day is planned. its great but so tiring. you use every second of every day doing something no time is wasted. my italian is coming along. I'm not really worried about it. it will come. I've just beeing focusing on learning more of the gosple and such.but I can understand about 90 percent of what my teachers says. I can pray and have a small conversation in italian and also bear testimony. Adjusting to the schedule has been very rough. and waking up isnt fun but that is what is asked so that is what i must do. at night during personal time the first couple days I layed there thinking what the heck am i doing. how in the world and i going to be able to tell the people of italy in italian about the gospel and such? how can a 18 year old boy tell people that they need to change there lives? i realized that god will help those that ask for him and those that serve him. he wouldnt ask me to do these things if he knew i couldnt do it. this week ive been praying my heart out. i wouldnt have made it through this week without the power of prayer. as a missionary you must rely on god alot. this whole process of being a misisonary wont work with out god. it is just a fact. god must be in the picture or else you cant succeed as a missionary. the food here is horrible.but its edible if that makes sense. i have accepted in my mind that im a missionary now lol. this week has been the most stressfull week of my life and the hardest week of my life. With all the studying and the lessons and the planning and the language. but im accepting this challenge and im putting my faith in god that he will give me the strength to do what he has asked of me. so  ill be a missionary for 2 more years and im starting to like hearing that. sorry my email is all over that place and im not really using grammar and stuff but i dont have a ton of time. if you want to hit me up on dear elder its \

so i want everyone to know im fine and ill write you actually letters back if you dear elder me. so my last thought before I go is about being Christ Like. Ive beening pondering about what this means and ive come up with this. Being Christ like is when you  can stop thinking about yourself and look to serve others. instead of look at poor me. how can I help someone that is going through a hard time. i can promise you that wen you serve others and lend a helping had that you will be blessed for it. Being Christ like is turning outword instead of turning inward. I love you guys and i miss you alot. i know this is where is need to be and the people of italy need to here a message about our lord savior Jesus Christ. And to learn of a glorious plan so that we may be able to return to live with him again. Thanks for the candies nana and papa and grandma and grandpa! Jesus Christ lives. He atoned for our sins. God is our loving Heavenly Father and we are created in his image. I say these thing in the name of Jesus Christ amen.

SO this whole week has been super good. Um lets talk about class. I think I said things about this in my last email but my not sure. I've realized that the language will come, because I'll be in italy. I will have to learn it lol. The thing im focusing most here is learning the language of the spirit. How does it speak to me or even how does it prompt me to do things. We learn about 3-4 hours of Italian a day and the rest it learning the spirit. In the Mtc never have I ever been so close to God in my entire life. This place which ill spend one short more quick month is amazing. Never has the scriptures been so important to me. I don't waste on second because that time is just between me and god. Yesterday at the devotional Elder William R Walker talked to us about how to be a happy and succesfull missionary. The first thing he spoke about was FOCUS ON THE LORD. He spent more time on this that any other of the ten points and I took heed to that. This isn't about me and thats why it will be one of the bests things I'll ever do. One thing he said on this topic that stood out to me was we shouldn't sound needy in our prayers. help me with this and bless me with that. instead Pray for your investigators you don't even know yet. pray for your trainer when you get into the field. pray for your mission president. these things hit me pretty hard. I realized I may have  sounded like I was complaining to My Heavenly Father. So this now I'm going to be focusing on that not just praying for me needs. So my comp makes me break out of my comfort zone often like on Sunday our district sang a song in Sacrament meeting, also dad we just do it in our branches which is just all the Italians. The next thing that really stuck out to me this weeks it that I'm on the Lords time as I serve a mission . I don't want to be wasting his time. So one way I remind myself of this is i draw a little clock on the inside of my hand. So I want everyone to know that I love them and that if you right me a dear elder with your address ill probably write you  a letter back. Thanks Nana and Papa and Grandma and Grandpa for the food! God loves us and Knows us by name. Christ is our savior.

So this weeks has been super good. Our lessons with our investigators are beginning to get smoother and we are working as a team. Our teacher Fratello Knutsons playes this guy who lives in Napoli and hes 30 yrs old with wife and kid. He super good at it. its almost like he is that person and not frat knutson yesterday we shared with him about the atonement and following Christ is was super cool because it was the best lesson we've taught yet. we could answer everything mostly in our broken italian and it was just a super good lesson. So the days are starting to blur together here. Before I go to bed I feel like i just woke up. My italian is coming along, the sentence structure is alot different that english so thats hard sometimes. but I can bear testimony and pray and usually get my point across if I know the words.

Im so excited to go to the temple today. Pday is so nice I just wake up and know it will be a great day and wont stress out. The food here is still super bad like sometimes the'll have good stuff but not really. Everything is edible but not enjoyable.  Ok so enough about me now its time for me to share a lil spiritual thought. okay. So last night at the Devotianal the speaker was Elder Lionel L Kendrick an emeritus general authority don't know what emeritus means so lol. he said some things that really impacted me. he talked about HOw as missionaries we can either serve time or we can serve the savior and what the difference is. When we serve time its like serving a sentence in jail, we wake up everyday and say what are we doing today and just bearing through the time. Then we can Serve our savior, and serving the savior we would wake up everyday and say how will we be able to this all in one day. I as a missionary can't wasted time. If I am going to give up 2 years of my life I should atleast owe it to my self and my savior that i should work as hard as i can. so that is my goal this week to not waste time and to use it all up. I need to serve my savior other than serve time. I love you all also go to lds.org and watch because of him and he lives!. also nana and papa + grandma and Grandpa thanks for the snacks. So this weeks has been pretty good I can't complain. Last Saturday was sister turleys last day and that was super sad! she has taught here for like 3 years and her time was up! So the first week here we had to teach her we thought she was a actual investigator and we taught her about lessons and then she became our teach. During her time as our teacher she has taught me more about my Savior and always made sure the Spirit was really strong in our room. She made it clear learning how to understand the spirit is more important than Learning the language. So There was that! THEN THE BEST THING EVER HAPPENED YESTERDAY!

hey momma im on! so i got my flight plans I will leave for the airport at like 6 and then my flight to houstin texas is at 10:30 am. then i will arive there at 2:35pm in houston. then i will fly from houstin at 3:50 pm to Frankfurt  germany and arrive at 8:40am germany time. then i will leave from germany at 10:55 am to Italy Milan and arrive at 12:05, so i can all every time exceprt when i get to milan

This really seemed to make it official. I was really excited for him. And he didn't really care for the food in the MTC.

SO HOW HAS EVERYONE BEEN!!! SORRY I CA'T FIGURE OUT TO GET CAPS LOCK OFF SO YEAH. SO THIS WEEK HAS BEEN PRETTY GOOD. PRETTY NORMAL, WAKE UP 6:30 THEN GET READY THEN AN HOUR OF STUDY BREAKFAST, GYM TIME FOR 55 MINUTES THEN SHOWER AND CHANGE AND WE HAVE CLASSES AND LUNCH AND DINER THE REST OF THE DAY AND THAT WAS MY MTC ROUTINE. SO  THIS WEEK NOTHING REALLY EXCITING HAS HAPPENED. I AM CONTINUING TO GROW CLOSER TO MY SAVIOR AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THE GOSPEL. THIS WEEK WE GOT OUR FLIGHT PLANS!! PROBABLY THE BEST THING EVER. I'VE HAVE COME TO REALIZE THAT I WOULD RATHER STRUGGLE WITH THE LANGUAGE IN ITALY THAN STRUGGLE WITH THE LANGUAGE IN THE MTC LOL. BUT MY ITALIAN IS COMING ALONG. I CAN UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING THING MY TEACHERS SAY AND IM SURE THAT WILL CHANGE WHEN I GET TO THE FIELD. THEY WILL SPEAK FASTER AND PROBABLY WITH AN ACCENT. SAYING BYE TO MY DISTRICT AND ZONE WILL BE TOUGH ON MONDAY. WE'VE ALL GOTTEN SO CLOSE IN THESE 6 WEEKS. I'M SO EXCITED TO LEAVE NOT THAT THE MTC IS BAD BUT THAT WE HAVE LEARNED EVERYTHING THEY CAN TEACH US. AND NOW IS IT OUR TURN TO GO LEARN THINGS THAT CAN ONLY BE LEARNED BY EXPERIENCE. THANKS AUNT LYDIA!! FOR THE ADVICE ON LAMINATING MY PREACH MY GOSPEL!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE PREACH MY GOSPEL. WE USE IT ALL THE TIME 24/7. IT IS SUCH A BLESSING. SO I'VE NEVER READ ALL OF IT. SO THIS WEEK I AS READING IT FROM COVER TO COVER AND ACTUALLY READING IT. I KNOW IT WAS WRITTEN WITH INSPIRATION FROM OUR HEAVENLY FATHER. IF THE PEOPLE WE ARE TEACHING HAVE A QUESTION. I CAN GUARANTEE THAT THE ANSWER IS THERE 99% OF THE TIME. SO FOR A SPIRITUAL THOUGHT AND I'M SORRY THIS EMAIL IS SO SHORT. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE POWER OF PRAY. WE ARE BLESSED WITH THE OPPORTUNITY THAT WE CAN TALK AND COMMUNICATE WITH OUR HEAVENLY FATHER.  I KNOW THAT JUST AS OUR FATHERS ON EARTH WANT TO HEAR FROM US. OUR FATHER IS HEAVEN WANT TO HEAR FROM US SO MUCH MORE. I CAN TESTIFY TO YOU THAT HE CARES AND THE HE LOVES US SO VERY MUCH. HE KNOWS EVERYTHING THING WE ARE GOING THROUGH AND THAT IF YOU PRAY WITH HONEST INTENT THAT HE WILL ANSWER YOUR PRAYERS. I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE. SO THE PLANE RIDE OVER WAS PRETTY STRESSFULL. TOTAL OF 16 HOURS OF FLYING SO THAT WASNT A TON OF FUN. I DIDNT GET MUCH SLEEP AND I WAS JUST SITTING THERE THINKING ABOUT WHAT I WAS DOING FOR 11 HOURS STRAIT. WHEN YOU THINK TO LONG YOU START TO HAVE DOUBTS AND REALITY SETS IN. THEN WE GET TO MILANO AFTER GOING FROM SALT LAKE TO HOUSTIN TEXAS TO FRANKFUT GERMANY TO MILANO. SO THERE WAS A TON OF FLYING. WE GET THERE AND MEET PRESIDENT DIB AND HIS WIFE THEY ARE SO SO NICE AND SO WE GOT OUR LUGGAGE AND WENT TO THE CARS HAD A MEETING AND WENT TO THE MISSION HOME. ALSO THERE IS THIS ELDER FROM HAWAII AND HIS NAME IS ANZIANO MOA. HES PRETTY COOL. THEN AFTER ALL THIS WE WENT TO THE MISSION HOME AND DROPPED THE BAGS OFF AND WENT TO THE MILANO DUOMO. THIS WAS SUPER COOL WE TRIED TO HAND OUT SOME BOOK OF MORMONS BUT NEARLY EVER SINGLE PERSON JUST KINDA WAVED US OFF AND DIDNT WANT TO TALK TO US. WE GET A LOT OF NOT INTERESTED.  THE AFTER WE WENT TO PRESIDENT DIBS HOUSE AND ATE SO OF THE BEST FOOD I HAVE HAD IN A MONTH LOL. AFTER FOOD WE HAD A TESTIMONY MEETING I HAD A HARD TIME STAYING AWAKE IN LOL. THEN THEY LET US GO TO BED EARLY AND I FEEL ASLEEP AS SOON AS MY HEAD HIT THE PILLOW. THAT WAS MTY FIRST DAY IN ITALY

                                                                             

Braden left the MTC on the 17th and arrived in Italy on wednesday the 18th. He left one of his suitcases, and his bag on the train in Salt lake. But miracles happen and they were able, with the help of a very kind man, have his luggage picked up and brought to the air port before he boarded the plane! So he had everything he needed to get out the country okay. It was great to talk to him a couple of times on the phone. He sounded happy and excited. I know he misses his family a lot. He has a big heart and this is hard for him to be away. So keep him in your prayers to have comfort. And send him emails, he can read them everyday but cant respond except once a week on wednesdays. SO WE WAKE UP AND WE GET ASSIGNED COMPS(NANA YOU DIDNT RUIN THE SURPRISE I DIDNT HAVE MY IPAD) SO WERE IN THIS ROOM THE TRAINERS COME IN AND BAM WE GET ASSIGNED AND IM IN THE BEAUTIFUL CITY OF FIRENZE OR AS YOU KNOW FLORENCE!!! SO THAT WAS SWEET AND THEN I FOUND OUT HOW HOT IS IT HERE. AND HOW HUMID. I AM CONSTANTLY SWEATING LOL. SO WE GO AND CATCH A TRAIN TO FLORENCE DROP THE BAGS OFF AND OFF WE WENT ON OUR BIKES(YAY) (NOT) WE TAKE OUR LONG BIKE RIDE OVER TO HENRYS HOUSE HE JUST WAS BAPTIZED AND HIS WIFE WHO HAS A BAPT DATE FOR THE 5TH. SO THAT WAS COOL THEY FED US AND WE SHARED A MESSAGE OF SOMETHING I DONT REMEMBER AND THEN BIKED TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF FIRENEZE TO GO TO THE CHURCH. SO THAT WAS LIKE A 35 MINUTE BIKE RIDE. OUR APARTMENT IS PRETTY CENTRAL AND HENRYS HOUSE IS SOUTH. ALSO MY COMPS NAME IS ANZIANO WHITESELL. HES BEEN OUT FOR A YEAR. THE AREA IS BEAUTIFUL JUST GO LOOK UP PICTURES OF IT AND THAT IS WHERE WE ARE AT. IT IS AWESOME. SO WE DID ALOT OF FINDING THE DAYS BETWEEN FINDING. ACTUALLY WE DO ABOUT 5 HOURS OR MORE OF FINDING DEPENDING ON THE DAY. AND HONESTLY 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 WE GET. NOT INTERESTED BUT THAT IS OKAY BECAUSE WE ARE LOOKING FOR THAT ONE. FINDING IS HARD AND TIRING WE WALK AND BIKE EVERYWHERE. DO DO MOST FINDING IN THE PARKS. SO ON SUNDAY I GOT UP AND INTRODUCED MY SELF AND DID THAT WHOLE THING THEN A BORE MY TESTIMONY SO THAT WAS COOL. ALSO I UNDERSTAND LIKE 38 PERCENT OF WHAT PEOPLE. THEY KIND OF HAVE AN ACCENT IN THERE ITALIAN SO THAT IS HARD. SO HEY I IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEND ME A PACKAGE SEND IT TO THE MISSION HOME AND NOT TO FIRENZE BECAUSE I MIGHT HAVE TO PAY CUSTOMS OR ILL BE GONE WHEN IT GETS TO MY PLACE. I HAVE A FEW PHOTOS ILL SEND FROM MY IPAD AND ILL DO THAT IN A SECOND. I WANT TO END WITH A SPIRITUAL THOUGHT. EVERY DAY I PRAY TO FEEL THE LOVE GOD HAS FOR THE PEOPLE OF ITALY. I SEE IT IN EVERYONE. THE GOSPLE OF JESUS CHRIST IS FOR EVERYONE AND WILL CHANGE ANY ONES LIFE FOR THE BETTER.  SO IM GOING TO TRY TO ANSWER EVERYONES QUESTIONS RIGHT NOW. DAD MY WARD IS KINDA BIG FOR ITALY AROUND 100 MEMBERS UM THERE ARE A DECENT AMOUNT OF AMERICANS THERE. ALSO THERE ARE MISSIONARIES AT THE AIR BASE SO HOPEFULLY THAT IS MY NEXT AREA AFTER I LEARN ITALIAN. OAKY. ALSO I HAD TO TAKE OUT 200 EURO FOR THE BIKE POLICY SO I JUST AM USING THE BIKE HERE. SO YEAH. I HATE BIKING ILL PROBABLY PUT ABOUT 500 MILES IN THE NEXT 2 TRANSFERS SO LOL. ALSO I WENT IN TO THE MTC 230 AND I WEIGHED MYSELF 216 LOL. IM LIKE SKINNY RIGHT NOW IT IS WEIRD. OKAY SO MOM YES I DO WANT SHORT SLEEVES BUT I CAN BUY THEM HERE OR YOU CAN SEND THEM TO ME WHICH EVER WORKS LET ME KNOW IN THE NEXT EMAIL. ALSO YOU CAN DO IT WITH THE WHOLE DIET THING! I BELIEVE IN YOU. OKAY SO ALLISON SHE ASKED ABOUT WEATHER SCENERY PEOPLE THE LANGUAGE ACCENT AND THE FOOD. OKAY SO IT IS VERY HOT AND VERY HUMID BUT WE DONT HAVE WIFI AT THE PAD ( WE GO TO THIS PARK EVERYDAY OR THE CHURCH TO CHECK EMAILS) ALSO NO AIR CONDITIONING. BUT IT IS VERY HOT AT LEAST TO ME I SWEAT SO MUCH IT IS KINDA GROSS. THE SCENERY LOL ITS ITALY HAHAHAH JUST LOOK UP PHOTOS OF FIRENZE YOU PROBABLY HAVE SEEN MORE SIGHTS THAN ME. THE LANGUAGE  IS PRETTY HARD AND I GET DOWN ON MY SELF BECAUSE I CANT REALLY HELP MY COMP. BUT THIS BOOK ADJUSTING TO MISSIONARY LIFE HAS HELPED ALOT. ALSO IM NOT ALOUD TO CHAT SO THAT SUCKS IM SORRY MY MISSIONARY PRESIDENT CAME OUT WITH AN EMAIL ABOUT IT SO IM SORRY. THE FOOD ALLISON IT IS GOOD. ITS STILL FOOD. YOU COULD MAKE THE SAME THINGS THERE. BUT I HAVENT EATEN OUT YET LOL. BUT THE GELATO IS THE BOMB LIKE OHHH ILL TAKE A PICTURE OF IT LATER. THEN MAREN WHO DID STOP SMOKING AND HAS BEEN CLEAN FOR 3 WEEKS AND WERE GOING TO SET A BAPT DATE FOR HIM NEXT LESSON AND THEN JUST OTHER RANDOM PEOPLE IN THE PARK WHO WE MEET AND GET THERE NUMBERS WE WILL CALL THEM SOON. SO WE ARE TEACHING PEOPLE OR MY COMP IS AND I TESTIFY ABOUT IT LOL. SO MY COMP IS PRETTY COOL. THE MORE WE BOTH OPEN UP THE MORE WE GET ALONG. SO THAT IS GOOD. HE IS A LIL DORKEY BUT IM A DORK SO LOL. SO YOU ASKED HOW I AM DOING. HONESLY IM DOING OKAY. THIS IS PRETTY HARD. NOT JUST SPIRITUALLY BUT PHYSICALLY SO. THE SECOND DAY I HAVE NEVER EVER PRAYED THAT HARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I WAS MISSING YOUGUYS A TON (STILL AM BUT ITS OKAY) THAT BOOK HELPED ALOT ADJUSTING TO MISSIONAY LIFE. I LOVE THE MISSION MORE EVER DAY. SO I THINK IM GETTING BETTER EVERY DAY I JUST HAVE A HARD TIME WITH THE LANGUAGE. IN FLORENCE INSTEAD OF COCA COLA THEY WOULD SAY HOHA HOLA SO THAT IS WITH ALL C WORDS SO THAT IS DIFFICULT BUT I CAN DO IT. I THINK IM AMOST IS THE CLEAR WITH JET LAG. JESSICA MY PILLOW IS NICE LOL.
